Understanding EP: A Comprehensive Guide + Workbook

This comprehensive book is designed for anyone looking to advance their electrophysiology knowledge including nurse practitioners, EP nurses and technologists, and new EP fellows. It begins by covering cardiac anatomy including a thorough heart dissection, the conduction system, and ECG rhythm interpretation. Next, is an introduction to the EP lab, x-ray imaging, electrograms, and pacing protocols. This is followed by a detailed explanation of cardiac arrhythmias and treatment strategies. To complete your understanding, the book covers cardiac ablation, intracardiac echo, and antiarrhythmic medications. This is ideal for anyone preparing for the RCES or IBHRE (CEPS). This book is paired with the corresponding workbook (Understanding EP: Workbook) to assess your knowledge while practicing interpretation skills. This workbook is ideal to practice electrogram interpretation with over 200 questions and corresponding labeled electrograms and explanations. It begins with waveform recognition and continues through advanced pacing maneuvers interpretation. Whether new to the EP lab or studying for the RCES or IBHRE (CEPS), this tool will help you advance your EP knowledge.

What People Are Saying

EP Essentials is creative and innovative. This interactive tool takes EP learning to the next level, including “live” electrograms and an app.  A must have for all EP labs.

Jill Peterson, MSN, RN, CCDS, CEPS

It has been said that it takes years of constant exposure to become proficient in the art of Electrophysiology (EP).  Although the learning curve is not the same for everyone, the science of EP is flooded with concepts, patterns, terminology and techniques that barely scratch the surface of the depth of the mysteries that surround the behavior of electrical impulses in cardiac tissue.

The methods for learning this exquisitely complex, almost meta-physical science, are a combination of its elements presented in every conceivable way.  Using all of your senses, take note of what you see, hear, feel, read, discuss, assimilate freely and under intense pressure.

The EP learning continuum is constant and requires your humble, emotional and intellectual devotion. What you read here will serve you well.  It is focused, conversational, well indexed and best taken when served frequently.  It will become the foundation of knowledge upon which you render qualified care to those who have entrusted their lives with you.

Harlie Ferguson, AS, CEPS

The field of electrophysiology (EP) may seem quite monotonous to the untrained professional. Some lab staff consider it a tiresome task, a necessary evil to treat patients, a job where they just go through the motions. However, to me, the field became increasingly fascinating the more I understood about it. As I gained the ability to discern waveforms and grasp the basic principles, I became intrigued. Along my journey, I began to recognize patterns, interpret pacing maneuvers, and gain proficiency. The more I understood, the more I was able to contribute and be an asset during the procedure—an extra set of eyes to prevent complications, a patient advocate, with the ability to engage with the physician on diagnosis and treatment strategies. This not only equates to a more fulfilling career, but also better lab performance, with increased safety and a decrease in procedural time. I continue to read, ask questions, and learn from each procedure; electrophysiology has now become my passion. I hope throughout your journey into electrophysiology, you will be able to share in the enthusiasm Dr. Paul Hass, Scot, and I have found.
